WHAT IS DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT?

Clarity can be
the first step.

Diagnostic assessment is a professional evaluation designed to understand patterns in thoughts, emotions and behaviour and to determine whether a mental-health condition may be present.

At Healing Blues, the process is structured and evidence-informed. Where appropriate, standardised assessments can be used alongside clinical interviews to build a fuller picture of your concerns.

The goal is not simply to attach a label. A useful assessment should help you understand what may be happening and what kind of support could be helpful next.

WHY CONSIDER AN ASSESSMENT?

Three reasons to
seek more clarity.

01 / CLARITY

Understand your concerns

If symptoms have been difficult to make sense of, an assessment can organise the information and provide a clearer clinical perspective.

02 / DIAGNOSIS

Explore a possible disorder

A qualified professional can assess whether your experiences are consistent with a psychological disorder and explain the findings.

03 / RE-EVALUATION

Get another perspective

If you have received a diagnosis before and still have questions, a fresh assessment may help you understand your current needs.

THE DIAGNOSTIC PROCESS

What happens
step by step.

01

Understand your story

The first appointment focuses on your concerns, relevant history and a mental-status examination. The clinician uses this conversation to understand the context behind your symptoms.

02

Psychometric assessment

Depending on the referral question, standardised psychological tests may be used to explore symptoms, behaviour, cognition or other areas in greater depth.

03

Report & recommendations

After the assessment, the findings are brought together into a clear report where applicable, including diagnostic impressions and recommendations for further support.

Assessment duration can vary depending on the concerns being explored and the number or type of tests required.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Diagnosis FAQs.

Do I need a diagnosis to start therapy?

No. Therapy can be started without a formal diagnosis. Assessment is useful when you want greater clarity or when a clinician believes diagnostic evaluation may help.

How long does a diagnostic assessment take?

There is no fixed duration. It depends on your concerns, the clinical interview and the assessments that are appropriate for your referral question.

Will I receive a report?

Where a formal diagnostic evaluation is completed, the findings can be compiled into a report with relevant conclusions and recommendations.

Can I seek a second opinion?

Yes. If you have received a diagnosis previously and would like another professional perspective, a re-evaluation can be discussed during your enquiry.

Do psychologists prescribe medication?

Psychologists do not prescribe psychiatric medication. If medication is clinically indicated, you may be referred to or advised to consult a qualified psychiatrist.
